Christianshavn was founded in the early 17th century by the King Christian IV, Christianshavn is a neighbourhood of Copenhagen, which is part of the Indre By (Eng. Inner City), located on the Amager island and separated from the rest of the city centre by the Inner Harbour. It includes three minor islands and has a population of over 10’000 inhabitants.
It takes only about 10 min to get to Christianshavn from the city centre. This area is unique and in many ways, it’s not only a neighbourhood, but kind of a lifestyle and community. Christianshavn is surrounded by the water, channels and bridges give unique maritime atmosphere to this area, where you can get the feeling of a small town, even though you are in a big city. Canals are homes to many boats and ships and houses are dating back to the 16th century.
Famous Christiania ‘free town’ located on a former military area is in Christianshavn as well.
