Praça do Comércio is one of the biggest squares in Europe (around 36 000m2) and it was, during a long time in the past, the entrance to the city of Lisbon. In Praça do Comércio, you can still see the marble steps of the past harbor flooded by the river and, behind your back, the beautiful "Arco da rua Augusta" (Augusta's street arch). Praça do Comércio is also the main square in Lisbon, also called Terreiro do Paço, and one of its most iconic symbols. It was the fundamental element of the city’s rebuilding plan of Marquês de Pombal, after the 1755 earthquake. Just in case you’re asking, the statue in the middle is of D. José I, the regent King of that time.

Comércio Square is one of the main entrances to the city of Lisbon. As it is so wide, this is Lisbon's favourite place when it comes to holiday or seasonal events - which are usually free entrance! At Comércio Square there is almost always something going on: if it is Christmas you will find a big christmas tree, if Portugal is playing soccer for the World or European Cup there will be a gigant screen for people to watch the match, during New Year's Eve this is where the biggest free party is at, together with some other small events, fairs, concerts and whatever comes to mind. Comércio Square is a bubbly square where almost every week or month something different is going on.
