Squares, Parks and Playgrounds
Praça do Comércio is one of the biggest squares in Europe (around 36 000m2) and it was, during a long time in the past, the entrance to the city of Lisbon. In Praça do Comércio, you can still see the marble steps of the past harbor flooded by the river and, behind your back, the beautiful "Arco da rua Augusta" (Augusta's street arch). Praça do Comércio is also the main square in Lisbon, also called Terreiro do Paço, and one of its most iconic symbols. It was the fundamental element of the city’s rebuilding plan of Marquês de Pombal, after the 1755 earthquake. Just in case you’re asking, the statue in the middle is of D. José I, the regent King of that time.
