Buen Retiro Park is the green lung of Madrid. It was built by the ancient kings as a recreation park. Here you can find real jewels. You have to visit the beautiful Crystal Palace, the French garden and the majestic pond. If you go with children it is very fun to rent a boat by the pond.
El Retiro de Madrid is undoubtedly one of the most visited parks in the capital. Birds, ducks, squirrels and many more animals walk every day through this beautiful natural space. It is an ideal place for families, couples, friends or even just to read with a book under one of its trees. You can also practice skating, cycling or rowing in the boats.
The Retiro is one of the emblems of the city. It is filled daily with people walking, cycling, picnicking, running, doing yoga, Pilates or many other sports. But let's go with some history about this famous park in Madrid. The Historical-Artistic Garden was created in the 17th century. It is the most important green area of Madrid, both for its size and its plant wealth. And it has different parts that have been transformed over time throughout its different historical stages. They emphasize the Parterre of French style; the Big Pond, the Rías and artificial Lakes; the Campo Grande of landscape style where the Palaces of Velázquez and Cristal are located; the gardens of Cecilio Rodríguez characterized by its cut cypresses, hedges of boxwood and pergolas and the Rosaleda; the gardens of the Planteles formed by pictures of bosquetes delimited by hedges and the Forest of the Memory.
The Parque del Buen Retiro is one of the protagonists of this district of Madrid. It has its flanks in the streets of Alcalá and O'Donnell in the extreme north, Doctor Esquerdo street in the east, the Avenida del Mediterráneo and the Reina Cristina promenade in the south and Alfonso XII street in the extreme west.
El Retiro belongs to the time of the Catholic Monarchs, at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th. However, the construction of the neighbourhood dates back to the end of the 19th century, when the city's demographic boom led to successive expansions.
